Why I Chose to Become Local Guide Timo

And Why I Do Things Differently?

Most people travel to Lapland dreaming about the same things.

Seeing the Northern Lights.
Walking through snow-covered forests.
Meeting Santa Claus.
Experiencing the magic of the Arctic winter.

What many visitors don't realise is that the guide they choose can make the difference between a good trip and a truly unforgettable one.

That's one of the reasons why I decided to create Local Guide Timo.

Lapland Has Always Been Home

I was born in Posio, a small municipality in Finnish Lapland.

Long before places like Riisitunturi National Park and Korouoma Canyon became internationally known attractions, they were simply places where my family spent time together. We went hiking, fishing, berry picking and enjoyed nature without ever imagining that people would one day travel from the other side of the world to experience the same landscapes.

For me, Lapland was never a destination.

It was home.

What Tourism Taught Me

For more than 13 years, I have worked in the tourism industry in Finnish Lapland.

Over the years, I had the opportunity to work my way up to become the Chief Operating Officer of one of Lapland's largest safari companies. I learned how large tourism operations work, how experiences are built and what guests truly remember after returning home.

The experience was valuable, but it also taught me something important.

The moments I enjoyed most were never spent behind a desk.

They were spent outdoors with guests.

Helping someone catch their first fish.

Watching a family meet Santa Claus.

Standing beneath the Northern Lights.

Sharing stories around a campfire.

Showing visitors places that had been part of my own life since childhood.

Why I Decided to Do Things Differently

Lapland has become one of the world's most popular winter destinations.

That is wonderful for the region.

But growth has also changed the tourism industry.

Too often, visitors find themselves moving from one attraction to another on a tight schedule, spending more time following timetables than truly experiencing Lapland.

Large groups.

Rushed schedules.

Limited personal interaction.

I realised that I wanted to create something different.

In autumn 2025, I made the decision to leave the corporate side of tourism and start building experiences my own way.

Not bigger.

More personal.

What Local Guide Timo Means

When you book a tour with Local Guide Timo, you are not joining a large operation.

You are spending the day with me.

The same person who answers your questions before the tour.

The same person who picks you up.

The same person who guides the experience.

And often the same person who sends your photos afterwards.

My goal is simple:

Create the kind of experience I would want for my own family and friends visiting Lapland.

That means:

  • Small groups whenever possible

  • Relaxed pacing without unnecessary rushing

  • Authentic local experiences

  • Genuine hospitality

  • Safety-first guiding

  • Real connections with Arctic nature and local culture

More Than Just a Tour

In addition to guiding, I also work as a photographer, videographer and creative producer.

This background has shaped the way I design my experiences.

For me, atmosphere matters.

Light matters.

Stories matter.

Sometimes the most memorable moment of the day is not the destination itself, but a conversation around a campfire, a beautiful sunset, a reindeer crossing the road or simply standing quietly in the middle of Arctic wilderness.

Professional photography is included in many of my experiences because I want guests to enjoy the moment instead of worrying about capturing it.

Family, Nature and Lapland

When I'm not guiding guests, I spend my time with my partner Saana, our children and our two cats here in Rovaniemi.

Like many local families, we enjoy spending time outdoors throughout the year. Fishing, hiking, campfires and exploring nature are not activities I do only for work — they are simply part of life in Lapland.

Welcome to Lapland

If you're planning a trip to Lapland, I invite you to experience it a little differently.

Less rushing.

More personal service.

More local knowledge.

More genuine moments.

Because the best Lapland experiences are not measured in kilometres travelled or attractions visited.

They are measured in memories you still talk about years later.
