Solo Travel in Lapland: Why Every Tour Is Guaranteed to Depart

Travelling alone is one of the most rewarding ways to explore the world, but it often requires much more planning than many people realise.

Finding activities that accept single bookings isn't always easy. And unfortunately, some travellers even face the disappointment of having a long-awaited tour cancelled at the last minute simply because not enough people signed up.

Last winter, I heard several stories like this from visitors to Lapland.

That didn't feel right to me.

That's why every scheduled Local Guide Timo experience has a minimum group size of just one guest. If you book a tour, I'll be there—whether there is one guest or six.

Not because it's the easiest way to run a business, but because I believe it's the right thing to do.

When people travel to Lapland, many have spent months planning their holiday, travelled thousands of kilometres and invested a significant amount of money to make their dream trip happen. I don't believe anyone should miss out on an experience simply because other travellers didn't make a booking.

To me, solo travellers are just as important as couples, families and groups of friends. Everyone deserves the opportunity to experience Lapland with confidence, knowing that the tour they've booked will actually take place.

One of the things I enjoy most as a guide is watching complete strangers become friends during the day. My tours are often several hours long, giving people plenty of time to chat, share stories and learn about each other's cultures. By the end of the day, what started as a group of strangers often feels like a group of friends.

If you're travelling solo, here's one tip I'd like to share: don't be afraid to connect with other travellers. Sometimes the best travel companions are staying in the very same accommodation as you.

Last winter I noticed something unusual. Within just a few hours, two solo bookings for my Riisitunturi tour arrived from the same accommodation. Later I discovered that the travellers had met during the evening meal at their accommodation. They started talking, realised they were both interested in the same experience, and decided to book the tour together.

Sometimes the best part of travelling isn't just the destination—it's the people you meet along the way.
